Diagnosing Dry Eye

This diagnostic tool performs a comprehensive dry eye workup. It analyzes tear production, tear composition, tear behavior, as well as tear evaporation. Additionally, the Oculus Keratograph performs ultrasonographic imaging of our tear production glands, called meibomian glands. In addition to analyzing tear film characteristics, the Keratograph assesses for damage caused to the front surface of the eye secondary to dry eye.

When the dry eye analysis is complete, patients will have a copy of their customized dry eye report with results of each individual assessment performed.

After the dry eye analysis and comprehensive dry eye exam, our dry eye expert eye doctor will then map out a personalized treatment plan and monitor objective and subjective improvement over time.

• Vital Dyes:  We will assess the health of the front of the eye with the use of fluorescein and lissamine green dyes. These vital dyes will temporarily accumulate in areas of dead and devitalized tissue that has been damaged secondary to dry eye syndrome. The level of staining will be tracked over time to track improvement in ocular health.

• Phenol Red Thread Test:  Measuring tear production with the phenol red thread test allows us to determine the volume of tears produced. This test lasts 15 seconds and includes a small, specialized thread placed in the outer cornea of your eyelid. The volume of tears that is collected is critical in determining your ability to produce tears.

• Slit Lamp Examination:  The slit lamp is basically a microscope made for your eyes. It helps your dry eye specialist thoroughly assess for the signs of dry eye syndrome and any secondary damage to the eye caused by dry eye.

Through imaging of the meibomian glands, measuring osmolarity of the tear film, and screening for certain conditions, we are able to diagnose and provide treatment for the condition.
